Scientific name:
Pelusios sinuatus
Identification:
Up to 55 cm. A huge, grey or black hinged terrapin with a serrated rear carapace.
Habitat:
In rivers and lakes almost throughout Kenya and Tanzania, below 1600 metres altitude, absent in lake Victoria.
Behaviour:
Aquatic, active by day, often basks on shorelines, logs and exposed rocks. In the dry season may bury itself in mud, or walk across country to find water.
Food:
Eats molluscs, snails, fish, amphibians and arthropods.
Reproduction:
Lays up to 30 eggs.
