Scientific name:
Malacochersus tornieri
Identification:
Up to 22 cm. A small, broad, flat tortoise with a uniquely flexible shell.
Habitat:
At low altitude, in and around rocky hills in savanna. Endemic to Kenya and Tanzania.
Behaviour:
Diurnal, may be crepuscular. Expert climbers on rocks. Hide in rock cracks and under boulders, sometimes in holes when inactive, often in groups.
Food:
They eat plants and invertebrates.
Reproduction:
Mating, male bites the female's legs and neck and tries tobturn her over. A single egg is laid.
